Casino rakeback

Rakeback returns a fixed share of turnover regardless of whether you won or lost. Unlike cashback it does not depend on the result, which makes it the most predictable promotion in the category.

On turnover, not on losses

Cashback returns a share of what you lost; rakeback returns a share of what you staked. A player who broke even receives nothing from cashback and the full amount from rakeback. Over a long period the second is the more reliable of the two.

The percentages look small because they apply to a larger base. Rakeback at 0.5% of turnover on £10,000 staked returns £50, and that £50 is certain rather than conditional on a losing period.

How it compares to the house edge

A 96% slot has a house edge of 4% on turnover. Rakeback at 0.5% returns an eighth of that, which reduces the effective edge to 3.5%. That is a real improvement and it is not a route to profit: the edge remains firmly negative.

The honest framing is that rakeback makes the same play slightly cheaper. Anyone describing it as a way to beat the house is describing something else.

Where the word came from and what it means here

Rake is the cut a poker room takes from each pot, and rakeback is a share of that cut returned to the player. Casinos have no rake, so the term was borrowed and reattached to turnover: a fixed share of everything staked, returned regardless of result.

The borrowed name causes one recurring confusion. In poker, rakeback returns money you demonstrably paid. In a casino, turnover is not a fee, and the share returned is a marketing cost rather than a refund. The arithmetic still works in the player favour, but the word promises a symmetry that is not there.

How the rate is set and why it is tiered

The rate comes out of the operator expected margin on turnover, which is why it is quoted in fractions of a per cent. An operator holding roughly 4% of stakes can return a tenth of that and still be well ahead, and a tenth of 4% is the 0.4% you see advertised.

Tiering follows from the same maths. Higher volume accounts are cheaper to serve per pound staked, so the rate climbs with turnover, commonly from 0.1% at entry level to around 1% at the top. Anything materially above that is either a limited campaign or applies to a narrow set of games.

Which turnover counts

Rarely all of it. Slots normally count in full, live tables at a fraction, and low edge games such as certain video poker variants are frequently excluded outright, for the obvious reason that returning a share of turnover on a game with a 0.5% edge would cost more than it earns.

The qualifying table sits with the programme terms. Reading it converts an advertised 0.5% into whatever the real rate is on the games you actually play, and for a table player that difference is often the whole value of the scheme.

Reading a statement and checking the credit

Rakeback is usually paid daily or weekly, and the account history shows both the qualifying turnover and the credit. Multiplying one by the published rate should reproduce the other, and where it does not, the gap is almost always game weighting rather than an error.

It is worth doing once when joining a programme, then not again. One reconciliation establishes whether the effective rate matches the advertised one, and after that the figure can be trusted or the programme discounted, without repeating the exercise every week.

Running alongside bonuses

Most operators pay rakeback on bonus-funded turnover as well as on cash play, which makes it one of the few promotions that stacks cleanly with everything else. A few exclude bonus turnover, and the exclusion sits in the terms rather than the promotion copy.

Where both are available, the combination is genuinely additive: the bonus improves the starting balance and the rakeback shaves the edge on everything staked afterwards. Neither turns the expectation positive, and any presentation suggesting they do together is worth reading twice.

It is rarely advertised, and it is often available

Rakeback sits behind VIP structures at most operators rather than on the promotions page, because publishing a rate invites every account to ask for it and the economics only work above a certain volume. That makes it the one promotion where asking is the normal route rather than a cheeky one.

A short message to support or a VIP contact, naming your monthly turnover and asking whether a turnover-based rebate is available on the account, gets a specific answer. The answer is often no below a threshold, which is useful information rather than a rejection: it tells you the scheme exists and what it would take. Where the answer is yes, the rate quoted is usually negotiable within a band.

Casino rakeback: what we like / what could be better

What we like

  • Paid on turnover regardless of outcome, so it does not require losing to receive
  • Usually credited as withdrawable cash rather than bonus funds
  • Predictable and calculable in advance from a published percentage
  • Reduces the effective house edge on exactly the play you were doing anyway

What could be better

  • Percentages are small, typically 0.1% to 1% of turnover
  • Usually restricted to higher VIP tiers rather than offered generally
  • Reduces the house edge without removing it, so the expectation stays negative
  • Rewarding turnover is itself an incentive to play more, which offsets the value

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between rakeback and cashback?

Rakeback returns a percentage of turnover regardless of result. Cashback returns a percentage of net losses over a period. A break-even player receives rakeback and no cashback.

Is rakeback paid as real money?

Usually yes, which is one of its main advantages over cashback. The terms state whether the credit is withdrawable, and for rakeback it commonly is.

Can rakeback make a game profitable?

No. It reduces the house edge by a fraction of a percentage point. A 96% game with 0.5% rakeback still returns less than it takes.

How is rakeback different from cashback?

Rakeback returns a share of turnover regardless of outcome; cashback returns a share of losses. Rakeback pays on winning sessions too, which makes it the more predictable of the two.

Is rakeback paid as cash?

Usually yes, and that is the point of it. Where an operator pays it as a bonus with wagering, it is a cashback offer under another name.

How often is it paid?

Daily or weekly at most operators running it. The rate is small per unit of turnover and accumulates through volume.

Is rakeback common at UK casinos?

Less so than offshore, where it is a standard part of loyalty structures.
